Preparing for Shabbat

A practical advance-planning approach to meals, prayer and device-free learning.

Preparing before Shabbat helps make room for rest and holiness. Arrange meals, needed supplies and the place where you plan to pray or learn. Discuss unfamiliar preparations with someone who understands your household’s needs and community practice.

Digital study tools should be used before or after Shabbat, not as a reason to use a device during Shabbat. Downloading a chapter does not make phone use permitted. Arrange an appropriate printed book beforehand and check questions about cooking, heating or carrying with a rabbi.

A place to begin

  1. Choose printed readings before Friday.
  2. Confirm local times and leave preparation time.
  3. Resolve household practice questions before Shabbat begins.

Editorial introduction based on the linked Chabad.org resource; not a personal halachic ruling or a rabbi-reviewed article. Ask a qualified rabbi about practical observance. Prepare printed learning before Shabbat; device use is not permitted simply because a reading is saved.
