Starting a Jewish Community Center

Begin with community needs, qualified leadership and sustainable planning rather than a building alone.

A community center starts with people and purpose, not just property. Listen to local families and learners, identify unmet needs and consider whether a class or regular gathering can serve them before taking on a large permanent space.

A Chabad House also involves religious and organizational leadership; it is not simply a label to place on an independent project. Consult qualified Chabad leadership. Legal structure, safeguarding, insurance, access and finances require local professional advice, and a website guide is not a substitute.

A place to begin

  1. Document a specific community need and existing resources.
  2. Consult religious leadership and local legal professionals.
  3. Pilot a modest program with clear responsibilities and a budget.
