Kindness and mitzvot

Ahavat Yisrael: Love for a Fellow Jew

Express concern through listening, welcome and practical support rather than slogans.

Ahavat Yisrael means love for a fellow Jew and is a central emphasis in Chabad teaching. It can be expressed through patient listening, hospitality, help with a mitzvah or thoughtful concern for someone who feels distant from community life.

Love does not require pretending that disagreements do not exist. It calls for treating a person with dignity while discussing ideas responsibly. Avoid judging a learner’s worth by background or observance, and offer support in a way that respects their agency and boundaries.

A place to begin

  1. Welcome a newcomer without testing their knowledge.
  2. Listen before offering advice or a religious practice.
  3. Choose a concrete act of care suited to the person.

Editorial introduction based on the linked Chabad.org resource; not a personal halachic ruling or a rabbi-reviewed article. Ask a qualified rabbi about practical observance. Prepare printed learning before Shabbat; device use is not permitted simply because a reading is saved.
