Everyday Mitzvot: Where to Begin

Learn one practice accurately and build a realistic path with qualified guidance.

The Rebbe encouraged people to take concrete steps in mitzvah observance. Beginning with a specific practice can make an abstract wish to grow more tangible. Learning its meaning and requirements together helps avoid turning the practice into a gesture without understanding.

Not all mitzvot apply in the same way to every person or circumstance. A beginner should ask which practice is appropriate and how to carry it out. Encouragement is valuable, but it does not replace instruction about blessings, materials or timing.

A place to begin

  1. Discuss a suitable first practice with a rabbi.
  2. Learn its purpose and requirements before beginning.
  3. Choose a realistic way to repeat it correctly.
