Torah study

How to Start Studying Torah

A manageable first study session with a text, a question and a clear next step.

Begin with a short passage and a reliable translation. Read it once for the overall meaning and again for details. Identify who is speaking, what is happening and which words you do not understand before reaching for a lesson about your own life.

A beginner’s study plan should fit both available time and background. Torah study has different obligations and appropriate paths for different learners; ask a qualified teacher when unsure. The goal of an introductory session is honest understanding, not instant expertise or a personal ruling.

A place to begin

  1. Choose five or fewer verses for your first session.
  2. Write one question grounded in the wording.
  3. Review the passage with a teacher or study partner.

Editorial introduction based on the linked Chabad.org resource; not a personal halachic ruling or a rabbi-reviewed article. Ask a qualified rabbi about practical observance. Prepare printed learning before Shabbat; device use is not permitted simply because a reading is saved.
