What Is the Weekly Parshah?

Follow the weekly Torah portion and understand why a reading schedule can vary.

The parshah is the weekly portion of the Torah read publicly in synagogue. The annual cycle brings the community through the Five Books of Moses. Some weeks combine portions, and festival readings can affect the schedule.

A chapter number and a parshah name are not interchangeable: one portion can span multiple chapters. Israel and the Diaspora can sometimes follow different schedules. Use the dated community reading rather than inferring this week’s portion from last week or from a generic book list.

A place to begin

  1. Confirm the portion for your location and date.
  2. Locate its opening passage in the Torah.
  3. Bring a question from the portion to a study group.
