The Weekly Torah Reading on Shabbat

Understand the shared reading, aliyot and connection to weekly study.

Public Torah reading is a central part of Shabbat morning services. The Torah portion is divided into aliyot, and a haftarah from the Prophets is also read. The details of participation and honors follow halachah and local practice.

Preparing the portion beforehand makes it easier to follow the reading. Do not confuse a translation in a Chumash with the Hebrew reading from a Torah scroll. Ask the synagogue about its customs and the correct portion, especially around festivals or when traveling.

A place to begin

  1. Find the dated portion before Shabbat.
  2. Read a short section and its translation in advance.
  3. Ask the synagogue for guidance on participation and honors.

Editorial introduction based on the linked Chabad.org resource; not a personal halachic ruling or a rabbi-reviewed article. Ask a qualified rabbi about practical observance. Prepare printed learning before Shabbat; device use is not permitted simply because a reading is saved.
