Judaism basics
What Is Judaism?
An introduction to Jewish belief, peoplehood and the everyday practices grounded in Torah.
Judaism joins learning, belief and action. Torah gives Jewish life a framework for relating to G-d, other people and the world. Prayer, Shabbat, festivals and acts of kindness are not separate hobbies: they belong to a shared religious life.
A beginner does not need to master every subject at once. Distinguish learning about Judaism from deciding how to observe a particular practice. A teacher can help you understand both the text and the community customs surrounding it.
A place to begin
- Choose one introductory topic, such as Shabbat or prayer.
- Write down unfamiliar words rather than guessing their meaning.
- Discuss practical questions with a knowledgeable local rabbi.
Editorial introduction based on the linked Chabad.org resource; not a personal halachic ruling or a rabbi-reviewed article. Ask a qualified rabbi about practical observance. Prepare printed learning before Shabbat; device use is not permitted simply because a reading is saved.
