Judaism basics
Who Are the Jewish People?
Understand Jewish peoplehood without reducing identity to a single belief or level of observance.
The Jewish people share a history, a covenant and a religious tradition. Jewish identity is not simply a measure of how often someone attends synagogue or how much Hebrew someone knows. Communities include people with very different learning backgrounds.
Questions about an individual’s Jewish status or conversion require qualified guidance and should not be settled by an online checklist. For learning together, begin with respect: ask what someone wants to study instead of making assumptions about their knowledge or family.
A place to begin
- Separate questions about history from questions about personal status.
- Let people describe their own learning background.
- Seek a qualified rabbi for conversion or status questions.
