Chavruta
Chavruta Questions for Beginners
Use close-reading questions that invite understanding rather than guessing a lesson.
Useful first questions are concrete: Who is speaking? What changed from the previous verse? Which word is repeated? What does the commentary explain that was unclear? These prompts give a discussion an anchor in the passage instead of pushing immediately toward personal inspiration.
When partners disagree, ask which words support each reading. If both answers rely on assumptions, identify them. Not every textual question has a short answer, and not every interpretation establishes practice. Bring serious unresolved questions to a teacher rather than inventing certainty.
A place to begin
- Choose one wording question and one context question.
- Point to the text supporting each suggestion.
- Distinguish a possible interpretation from a verified explanation.
