Chavruta

What Is Chavruta?

Discover partner-based Torah learning through reading, questions and respectful discussion.

Chavruta, also spelled chavrusa or havruta, means learning with a partner. Instead of silently reading side by side, partners explain the text to each other, raise questions and compare interpretations. Disagreement can be productive when it stays focused on the passage.

A good partnership is not a contest to sound clever. Each learner should have time to speak and admit uncertainty. Choose a text appropriate to both learners and consult a teacher when the discussion reaches a point neither partner can resolve responsibly.

A place to begin

  1. Agree on a short passage and a meeting time.
  2. Take turns reading and explaining.
  3. Finish with one shared conclusion and one open question.
