How to Learn Torah With a Partner

A simple session structure that keeps paired learning grounded in the text.

Begin by agreeing what you are trying to understand. Read a short unit aloud, define difficult terms and let each partner restate the passage. Only then compare explanations or move to a commentary. This order helps both learners participate rather than leaving one to lecture.

Keep track of the difference between an observation and a conclusion. A question can remain open without making the session a failure. End by reviewing the text together and noting which issues need a teacher’s explanation or a source you have not yet checked.

A place to begin

  1. Read, clarify and summarize before debating.
  2. Ask each partner to explain the other’s view fairly.
  3. Keep a shared note of unresolved questions for your teacher.
