Mishnah and Talmud Explained
Understand two central layers of Oral Torah and how their styles differ.
The Mishnah organizes teachings of the Oral Torah into tractates and orders. The Talmud develops discussion around Mishnah and related teachings, including analysis, arguments, narratives and legal reasoning. Reading a Mishnah is therefore not the same experience as following a Talmudic discussion.
A sentence can describe a disputed position rather than the final practice. Beginners should resist turning an isolated passage into a ruling. Start with a tractate and a short section, and use guidance that explains terminology and the structure of the discussion.
A place to begin
- Find the tractate and chapter name.
- Separate the positions being discussed.
- Use a teacher or commentary before drawing practical conclusions.
