The Rebbe’s legacy

What Is Chabad Shlichut?

Understand emissary work as responsibility for Jewish education and community service.

Shlichut means being sent on a mission; in Chabad it commonly refers to the work of emissaries serving Jewish communities. Their work can involve teaching, prayer, hospitality and helping people connect with mitzvot, depending on local circumstances.

Formal emissary work is not established by announcing a project online. It involves qualified leadership, preparation and ongoing responsibility. Someone who wants to help can begin by supporting an existing center while learning what long-term community service actually requires.

A place to begin

  1. Speak with recognized Chabad leadership about formal pathways.
  2. Learn the needs and history of the community.
  3. Support an existing program before assuming a leadership role.
