Kaddish and Communal Prayer
Understand Kaddish beyond the assumption that it is only a prayer about death.
Kaddish praises and sanctifies G-d’s name and appears in several places in communal prayer. Mourner’s Kaddish has an important role in Jewish mourning, but Kaddish is not simply a text describing death. Its recitation requires a minyan under traditional practice.
Different forms of Kaddish serve different points in the service. If you are mourning or observing a yahrzeit, ask the synagogue or rabbi about timing, wording and who recites which form. An app can help you prepare, but it cannot supply a physical prayer quorum.
A place to begin
- Ask which form of Kaddish applies to the occasion.
- Arrange to attend an appropriate local minyan.
- Seek personal guidance for mourning and yahrzeit questions.
