Minyan and prayer

What Is a Minyan?

Understand a Jewish prayer quorum and why specific prayers require communal participation.

A minyan is the quorum required for certain parts of communal Jewish prayer. In traditional Chabad practice it consists of ten Jewish men who have reached halachic adulthood. Questions about who counts and how a quorum is established require qualified guidance.

Not every prayer requires a minyan, and an online gathering should not be assumed to meet the requirements of physical communal prayer. If you are organizing a service, ask a local rabbi about participation and the prayers that can be said in the circumstances.

A place to begin

  1. Confirm the requirements with the local rabbi.
  2. Check the actual service time with the synagogue.
  3. Do not assume a group-chat member count establishes a minyan.
