Minyan and prayer

Your First Synagogue Service

Prepare for a visit with a prayer book, local guidance and realistic expectations.

A synagogue service includes prayers arranged in a particular order, with some recited quietly and others led aloud. On relevant days there is Torah reading. Seating arrangements, siddur editions and customs can differ between communities.

You do not need to pretend to know the sequence. Contact the synagogue before visiting and ask someone to help with page numbers and unfamiliar moments. A respectful question is more useful than copying a gesture without understanding whether it applies to you.

A place to begin

  1. Confirm the service time and visitor arrangements.
  2. Ask which siddur edition the community uses.
  3. Request guidance about participation rather than assuming.
