Minyan and prayer

Why Pray With a Minyan?

Explore communal prayer, shared responsibility and the support of a synagogue community.

Praying with a minyan joins an individual’s prayer to communal worship and allows parts of the service that require a quorum. It also creates a regular opportunity to support other people’s prayer, including those saying Kaddish.

Participation is more than arriving whenever convenient. Confirm the service schedule, come prepared and ask how to follow respectfully. If attendance is difficult because of health, distance or another circumstance, seek guidance rather than drawing conclusions from a general encouragement to attend.

A place to begin

  1. Ask the synagogue which services need attendance most.
  2. Arrive early enough to settle and find the correct place.
  3. Discuss personal attendance difficulties with a qualified rabbi.
